A SCENE TALK #5

CONVENIENCE YOUNG

Meet CONVENIENCE YOUNG, an artist who "depicts the feeling of being born in a convenient era." We bring you an interview packed with the process and passion behind his work, from his approach to creation to the thoughts and behind-the-scenes stories of this collaboration, all the way to the final product.

Q1 The origin of the name "CONVENIENCE YOUNG"

The meaning of "CONVENIENCE YOUNG" is "young people born in a convenient era." It expresses the idea of asserting one's own existence, unconstrained by information or scenery, even while feeling overwhelmed by the constant abundance of convenient things. The background of the name is that shortly after I was born, my parents started a convenience store, and they would work the register while carrying me as a baby. Also, when I was in elementary and junior high school, it was a daily routine to always go play at the convenience store after school, and now those times are deep memories. I included the word "CONVENIENCE" in the name to also record these memories.

Q2 Why did you become an artist?

The first time I drew something for someone was in my childhood, a gift for my father's birthday: a vase I bought at a 100-yen shop and painted. Words and unfading flowers were drawn all the way around. He was delighted with the handmade item. The feeling that my thoughts could be conveyed by working with my hands still remains in my heart. Since I was little, I've loved making things rather than just drawing, and doodling and drawing in my notebook became second nature. It all started when a friend told me to become an illustrator, which made me start thinking about it, and at the same time, we talked about holding an exhibition together, which made me want to pursue it seriously.

Q3 What is the most important aspect of your work as an artist?

I value the unreserved expression of what I want to create, without being constrained by genre. This allows me, long after a piece is finished, to discover parts of myself I didn't know existed, such as realizing "I must have felt this way at the time." In this way, creating allows me to confront myself. Consistent with the meaning behind my brand name, as a young person born in a convenient era, I want to unhesitatingly translate the feelings that move my heart in the moment into my creations.

Q4 Moments in your daily activities when you feel, "I'm glad I kept going."

Precisely because we now have access to so much information and emotion through screens, it's incredibly encouraging when people make the effort to come in person, see my work with their own eyes, and I get to witness the emotions and humanity that arise in that very moment. I receive so much power and energy from those who directly share warm words of encouragement, telling me that my work gives them strength or makes them feel energized.

Q5 A.C.E. Collaboration

This collaboration with A SCENE was unexpected. I honestly had some initial anxiety, as I couldn't imagine my art being applied to smartphone-related items. However, as we solidified the concept and the project took shape, my anxiety turned into excitement, and I was thrilled to see how it would all turn out. I remembered using a smartphone case with artwork by an unknown illustrator when I was in high school and loved it. I would be happy if this project could become a cherished memory for someone, making them glad they used it.

Q6 The production process of sci-fi themed illustrations

I had never created illustrations or characters for sci-fi itself, so I spent a long time deliberating on how to express sci-fi as CONVENIENCE YOUNG. However, as I decided on the names and personalities for each character, I naturally became engrossed in the creation process.

Q7 Collaboration item completed

Thanks to SCENE, the final product turned out several times better than I had imagined. It was truly impressive to see how simply applying the artwork to different items created entirely new looks, allowing me to view the illustrations in various facets. At the same time, it made me even more excited to imagine the reactions of those who would hold these items.

Q8 Targeting convenience-store-frequenting young users

Since I had never drawn sci-fi elements before, this time I drew a sci-fi illustration different from my usual Convenience Young style. I would like you to freely interpret the themes and reasons behind how I drew each of the two illustrations. And I hope you enjoy the illustrations, each with a different expression for each item.

Q9 Desired items in Scene A

I'm looking for a case that can store all my PC accessories, such as USB drives and chargers, in one place.

Q10 Future plans and goals

Holding a solo exhibition overseas remains a goal of mine. Also, after I had a child, creating picture books that both children and adults can enjoy became a major goal. Currently, I am working on a series where I paint on table lamps, which is a beloved form of expression that I want to continue, even if it is purely for my own satisfaction. I love the act of creation itself, not just painting, so I want to continue to value the process of giving form to whatever I feel inspired to create.

CONVENIENCE YOUNG

An illustrator popular for their unique crayon touch. After graduating from Bunka Fashion College, they began their career in 2019, creating CD jackets, shop logos, and more. "CONVENIENCE YOUNG" (meaning "young people born in a convenient era") refers to how these individuals assert their identity even as they are surrounded by and nearly buried in a wealth of convenient things.
